Career Coach/Student Outreach Coordinator

General Statement of Duties:

The Career Coach / Employer Outreach Coordinator is a member of the professional career services team and reports to the Director of Career and Professional Engagement. This position provides general career coaching to current students and alumni, as well as outreach to and coordination with employers. Those in this position will work with a wide variety of campus populations including traditional, non-traditional, first year, veteran, online, and international students and alumni, as well as in close coordination with faculty, administration, other offices on campus, and external partners.

Examples of Duties:

  • Educate students on a wide variety of topics related to job search, career development, professional etiquette, and industry-associated communication skills
  • Teach students the skills to self-navigate their respective career journeys by utilizing campus / community information and micro/macro resources (in-house to global)
  • Assist students and alumni with career education and exploration, planning for a job or graduate school, and providing resources for identifying experiential education opportunities
  • Guide students/alumni with appropriate resources for job search and career development
  • Provide resume, cover letter, graduate school essay, and LinkedIn reviews, interview skills and salary negotiation training, and mock interviews
  • Instruct student development and/or career exploration course/workshops
  • Conduct major-specific and professional topic presentations in classrooms, to student organizations, virtually, and during campus wide events and initiatives
  • Oversee and manage student employees in the Student Success Center
  • Utilize social media tools (marketing / management) and comfortable using technology to deliver services
  • Maintain/update/create office communication plan (marketing, promotional, and career related resources)
  • Utilize various career assessments
  • Assist with office wide events such as National Career Development Month, Student Appreciation Days, Etiquette Dinner, and other various “pop up events”
  • Represent the office at college wide events such as recruitment and open house events
  • Manage employer/student Handshake accounts and answer inquiries
  • Record and track appointments using EAB system (Educational Advisory Board)
  • Participate fully in the university community: provide consultation, training, and outreach to students, faculty, staff and administrators
  • Assist as needed with First-Destination survey and other office initiatives
  • Maintain active membership in local and national professional organizations

Required Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate and present information to others in one-to-one, classroom, online, and business/industry environments
  • Comfortable working in an open office environment 
  • Stay abreast of changing institutional information and updates to college-wide initiatives and polices
  • Proven cross-cultural and interpersonal skills including the ability to represent the university in a positive way to diverse populations 
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of student support services to accomplish student success goals
  • A strong commitment to the university’s mission to honor the catholic heritage and the spirit of St. Marguerite D’Youville by fostering an environment that promotes academic, social, spiritual, and professional development in programs that promote leadership and service

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • One to three years’ experience in career services, human resources, social services, counseling, advising, or higher education
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and other career management software designed to support the needs of this position
  • Skilled at connecting and building rapport with students, alumni, and employers/external partners
  • Experience developing and facilitating skill building workshops

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master Degree
  • Career services experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience reviewing employment application materials (resumes and cover letters, etc.)
  • Familiar with Higher Education, career services and Learning Management Systems (currently utilizing Canvas, EAB, Handshake, Panapto, Sharepoint)
